Car Insurance

In order to drive a car on the roads in the UK it is a legal requirement to have car insurance. You may have your own car insurance policy, or if you share a car you may be a named driver on the other person’s car insurance policy. Either way, car insurance provides valuable protection for you and for others, and is a legal requirement in the UK.

The cost of car insurance can vary widely from one provider to another, and it is definitely worth comparing different policies and companies in order to find lower cost cover. The cost of your cover will depend on a number of things, and this includes your age, the type of car that you are insuring, any past claims, your address, and the level of cover that you select.

There are three main levels of car insurance cover to choose from, with cover to suit most needs, circumstances, and budgets. The three levels of car insurance cover are:

Third party insurance cover: This level of cover is the most basic one available, and may suit younger drivers with older, more basic cars. This is because car insurance for younger drivers can cost a fortune, and by selecting basic cover you will fulfil the legal requirements of having insurance cover without having to pay through the nose. However, this is not the best option if you have a newer car, as you could end up paying a fortune from your own pocket if your car gets damaged in an accident that was your fault. This level of cover provides protection for any third party that suffers injury, damage, or loss as the result of a car accident that was your fault.

Third party, fire, and theft cover: Third party, fire, and theft cover is the next level up from third party cover, and provides more in the way of protection but also costs more. With this level of cover you are protected against fire damage or theft of your own vehicle, in addition to the same third party cover offered with third party only cover. So, if a third party suffers injury, damage, of losses as a result of an accident that was your fault there is protection in place. You will also be protected if your car is damaged due to fire, or if your car is stolen. This level of cover is the most popular, particularly with younger drivers.

Fully comprehensive cover: Fully comprehensive insurance cover is the highest and most expensive level of cover. This type of cover is recommended if you have a more expensive vehicle in order to avoid the potential financial losses that could come if your vehicle is badly damaged in an accident that was your fault. With fully comprehensive cover you enjoy the benefits that third party, fire, and theft cover provides. In addition to this you will also be covered in the event that your car is damaged even if the accident was your fault.
